Chiller Replacement at Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital

The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton faced a critical need to replace its aging existing chillers, which had reached the end of their operational life and were beyond reasonable repair. The hospital required a solution that not only matched the cooling capacity of the existing system but also significantly reduced the global warming potential (GWP) of the refrigerants used on-site. Integral, the company managing the hospital's facilities, engaged Cooltherm to provide the new chiller solution. The project, completed in June 2024, involved the installation of three 390 kW chillers.

Key Challenges and Solutions

The replacement of the hospital's chillers posed several challenges, particularly due to the need for a complex crane lift both to extract the old equipment and install the new – all without disrupting the hospital's operations. This necessitated three separate crane lifts to ensure that redundancy was maintained throughout the installation process.

Cooltherm distinguished itself as the only company capable of providing a turnkey solution that met the project's unique requirements. Their ability to manage both the specialised equipment and the intricate logistics of the crane lifts made them the ideal choice for this demanding project. The successful completion of each lift demonstrated Cooltherm's expertise in handling complex installations within sensitive environments.

Project Execution

The project was executed in three distinct stages. This phased approach allowed for continuous assessment and ensured that the hospital's cooling needs were met without any interruption. The seamless coordination between Cooltherm and Integral was a testament to the strong partnership between the companies.

The client's decision to proceed with each subsequent stage of the project was a clear indication of their satisfaction with Cooltherm's work. This successful partnership has laid a strong foundation for potential future collaborations between Cooltherm and Integral, with both companies poised to continue delivering high-quality solutions for challenging environments.

The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital chiller replacement project underscores Cooltherm's position as a leader in delivering specialised HVAC solutions for critical environments. Their ability to provide a comprehensive, turnkey solution, coupled with their expertise in managing complex installations, sets them apart as a preferred partner for projects requiring precision, reliability, and innovation.
